Charleston Home + Design Magazine featured articles in their Spring 2008 to Fall 2009 Magazines on the process of building a house from start to finish.  Clark-Glidewell/Architect was selected as the architect and designed the entire house.  (Interior designers selected the materials, paint colors and furnishings.) This 4500 sq. ft. house is located on a very small lot at the back of the neighborhood.  It may have first appeared to be the worst lot in the neighborhood, but today it is one of the best lots.  The reason is because the site is designed to use the zoning requirements to its advantage.  With a retainage pond on one side they were able to have multiple windows on the east elevation, not possible with other houses in the area.  The house was designed to the maximum height allowed which gave them not only four levels of living space but a roof deck.  The house has 5 bedrooms, 3-1/2 baths, 2 fireplaces, elevator and a 3 car garage. The interior has a large open Living, Dining and Kitchen space without columns. The Master Bedroom is furnished with a full service coffee area and two Master Closets.  Separate his and hers sinks are designed within the Master Bath.  The Master Bath contains a large 2 person shower, jacuzzi tub and a private toilet area.  The third floor highlight is the exquisite Chart Room.  You will find maps used as wall paper, a painted map of the Charleston peninsula on the floor and hidden Murphy bed.  The Chart Room has multiple uses but it functions well as a family office with a playroom just off the side for the children.  Just off the playroom on the third floor deck you climb the circular stair to the roof deck.
When standing on the roof deck you have a 360 degree view over all the existing houses with views of the City of Charleston and Ashley River.  The house is definitely designed with entertaining in mind with multiple exterior porches and a pool terrace.  The porte cochere can be used as an entertaining area with access to a wood burning fireplace but also can be used as additional location to park a car if necessary.  Overall, the design of the space is made for family living and enjoying friends.

This 3000 sq. ft. home is located in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.  The homeowners were looking for a traditional low-country design but with the amenities of today.  This home has 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and a three car garage. It is a simple home with the homeowners personal interior design selections.  The Foyer is designed to flow seamlessly into the Living Room.  The Kitchen and Dining Room are not completely closed off from the entry, but is hidden from the front door.  It is quite accessible to the rear porch and family activities outside at the pool.  The guest and Master Bedroom are located on the first level each with their own bath.  Upstairs tucked into the roofing members are two bedrooms with a Jack and Jill bathroom. (One bathroom accessed from two bedrooms.)  The porches are extensions of the living space and are used extensively.  Easily tucked behind a grand old oak with hanging Spanish moss and now you have low-country living at its best.

A large family living in Ravenel, South Carolina, located 15 miles south of Charleston, desired a plantation style home. Their design is based loosely off the historic Dean Hall Plantation found in Beaufort, South Carolina.  This design does not have the raised first floor or the grand brick staircase familiar to Dean Hall Plantation.  Raising a family as the homeowners were raised was an important aspect in the overall design of this project. They wanted their children to have the freedom to explore the house and the property.  One design modification was to make the wrap around porch less than 2' from the ground.  With this decision, they were able to eliminate the balustrade at the front porch and this allowed the children to run and jump off the porch at any location. This 4000 SF house boasts 12' porches for extended living use, copper roof, "new" historic reproduction brick and cedar lined walls, floors and ceilings throughout the interior.  It has 5 bedrooms, 3-1/2 baths and 3 masonry wood burning fireplaces.  The 10' x 50' hall is large enough to hold furniture and is used well for entertaining friends and family. A large kitchen, mud room, family room, and rear screened porch are areas the family enjoy on a daily basis.
