Renovations & Additions

Clark-Glidewell/Architect has designed many renovations and additions in homes from 1850 to 1990. Our office can complete full home renovations that may or may not include an addition.  A well planned renovation can accommodate the need for more space and changing family lifestyles.  Renovations and additions should both respect and enhance the existing architecture.  Remember the design is about how you want to live not how the architect wants you to live.  You will be living in the house long after the construction is complete and you should be happy with the new modifications.

Please find below a partial list of my renovations projects and photos of two specific projects.  If you would like further information on any of these projects please contact me at the email listed below.  I have many satisfied clients who can provide a reference.

Kitchen/Dining Before Kitchen/Dining After Kitchen View towards Foyer View of Island

This Kitchen is located in an historic, Victorian style, Charleston single house.  As with all Charleston homes in 1880, the kitchen was not designed for today's family needs.  After much discussion, a major decision was made to remove the wall between the very small kitchen and the large Dining Room.  The original brick chimney remains as the focal piece of this design.  The island wraps around the chimney creating lots of counter space.  The stainless Viking range and hood are located on the opposite side of the chimney.  A stainless farm sink sits under a large double hung window opposite the range.  We enlarged the room at the left side and created a unique situation with the Foyer stairs.  We chose to highlight the stair details rather than hide them.  Custom made stained maple cabinets, with upper glass display space and separate wine storage, give this homeowner a place to store anything.  The counters are honed granite and are not sealed.  Even with many children entering this house, the counters are still as beautiful as they were when they were first installed.  An opening to the Family Room, at the right, provides counter access and seating for the children for art projects.  The cabinets underneath are accessible from both the Kitchen and the Family Room.  We truly only renovated one room in this house, but it affected the entire floor - from the Foyer, the Dining Room to the adjacent Family Room. With the help of an architect as a designer you can make a huge impact on your living space and quality of life.  Construction was completed by Palmetto Craftsman and after photographs taken by Margaret Wood-Atwood.

Entry View View through Perspective lens Bamboo Details

This exquisite Master Bath was designed as an addition to a 1940's Spanish Revival style home.  The addition blends with the existing exterior materials.  In years to come, no one will know it was an addition.  My clients were interested in designing the bath in the Arts & Crafts style.  They wanted connection to nature and it was emphasized  by placing a circular window above the bowl sink so they could view the wonderful scenery right in their own yard.  A mirror is hidden in the side of the left storage cabinet.  It can be opened for use, yet closed when they want to enjoy the view.  A separate vanity area with a large, well lit, mirror is set in a small bay with casement windows adding natural light.  The space is very open with a beadboard, cove lit, vaulted ceiling.  The heartpine flooring extends from the Master Bedroom creating continuity from one room to the next.  The private bathing room contains a large jacuzzi tub and a separate large shower/steam room.  Bamboo details are seen throughout, from being used as a privacy screen for the toilet area to accent details under the granite counter.  Construction was completed by Liberty Construction.  The Regional Business Journal presented this project with the PACE award.
